Butter Cakes are the simplest of cakes to make. They take about 15 minutes to prepare and around 35 minutes to bake, and make for a great mid-morning or mid-afternoon snack, or something simple and unpretentious for dessert. They form the basis for more elaborate cakes.

- Transfer the batter to the cake tin, and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C for 35 minutes. You can insert a skewer into the cake to test for doneness. If it comes out cleanly, it's done.
- Allow to cool, before carefully removing from its container.
- Slice and serve. Best served with a hot beverage of choice and some fruit or fresh cream on the side.
